The core freight density calculator formula used to determine freight class has two steps:

Worked example

A pallet measuring 48 in long, 40 in wide and 36 in high weighs 300 lbs. Cubic feet = (48 × 40 × 36) ÷ 1728 = 40 ft³. Density = 300 ÷ 40 = 7.5 lb/ft³. On the density chart below, 7.5 lb/ft³ lands in the 6–8 bracket, which maps to freight class 175. Repacking the same weight into a 30-inch-high pallet instead would raise density to about 9 lb/ft³ and drop the class to 125, typically lowering the per-hundredweight rate.
